Pan-Asia Language Environment/Oriental Express (PanALE/Oriental Express)

Welcome to PanALE/Oriental Express home page. Oriental Express is a dynamic localization extension to enable any MacOS compatible computer with system 7.5 or above to localize your favorite applications into one of the Asian languages - Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. This software is shareware. The localization packages for Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer are included.

System Requirement
- MacOS and compatible personal computers with 68030 or better. PowerPC is recommended.
- System 7.5 or later, MacOS 8.0 recommended.
- Minimum 8 MB RAM, 16 MB recommended.
- Minimum 8 MB free storage on hard drive.
Oriental Express: An Invitation to Dynamic Localization
Localization is a term used to describe a program with all its graphic user interface (GUI) elements in a native language. For example, if all the texts in menus and dialogs are in Japanese, this program is called a Japanese localized software. 
Following is a snapshot of the Corel WordPerfect 3.5 dynamically localized into simplified Chinese using Oriental Express 2.0. 
Oriental Express contains a system extension - PanALE extension, and some demo database for dynamic localization. With this extension, any applications can be localized simply by a mouse click into one of the CJK languages. Oriental Express provides two modes for dynamic localization: application specific localization and global localization. For users who have difficulty to understand English, a global dynamic localization can be used, it turns the Mac into a localized systems, and with proper databases turn any application into a localized application. For users who only wants some specific applications to get localized, application specific localization can be used by registering it to a specific supported language.
Installation
- Launch the PanALE Utilities to install all necessary components and following instruction.
- After PanALE Utilities installation, restart the Macintoch.
- Following components are installed:
- In System Folder: Localization Folder
- In Apple Menu Items Folder: PanALE Register and PanALE Compiler
- In Control Panels Folder: PanALE Menu
- in Extensions Folder: PanALE Extension
- in Fonts Folder: CJK fbit fonts depending on the installation
- New Beijing (font suitcase) and New Beijing fbit
- New Taipei (font suitcase) and New Taipei fbit
- New Tokyo (font suitcase) and New Tokyo fbit
- New Seoul (font suitcase) and New Seoul fbit
- If installation is successful, you will see the PanALE Menu
 on the menu bar. Click on the PanALE menu, you should see something like:

PanALE system menu provides a shortcut for most of the Oriental Express functions:
- About UniDoc Software: display the UniDoc System LLC information.
- System Default: disable any dynamic localization.
- One of the four Asian language encoding: force the Mac to use Oriental Express localization database for GUI translation.
- Localization Register: Launch the Localization Register program
- Localization Compiler: Launch the Localization Compiler program
- Localization Log/Localization log is on: save/stop saving the GUI text context/translation into a log file. The log file will be used by Localization Compiler for GUI localization retouching.
Apply Global Dynamic Localization
If the PanALE System Menu is enabled, one can select from the supported languages to enable the global dynamic localization. To do this, click the PanALE Menu icon on the menu bar:
move the mouse to one of the languages, and release the mouse. This steps force the localization globally. The check sign in front of the language indicates currently used localization languages. Select "System Default" to disable global localization. Note, though, the change made through PanALE Menu will only be effective in current sessions. After restart, the localization setting will be reset.
Localization Log
It will make it a lot easier to set the "General control" and "Date and Time" control panel accordingly before you start to log the GUI text context and its localization. 
The localization log will record all the screen text drawing into a log file. During a log session, use mouse to click and pull down each menu, all the necessary windows, dialog. Some of these GUI elements may already be localization using the generic localization database. Both the original phrase and the translation will be logged. After all the GUI elements have been redrawn once, select under PanALE system menu the "Localization Log is on" once to stop the log session. The log file can be used in the Localization Compiler for further retouch.

PanALE Menu On/Off
The PanALE system menu can be disabled using the PanALE Menu radio button. The change will take effect after restart.
Use Dynamic Localization
Sometimes it is desirable that the dynamic localization is disabled. This can be done by unchecking the "Use Dynamic Localization" checkbox. When this checkbox is unchecked, the localization database will not be used.
Smart Font Switching
When localization is enabled, (either by application registration or by global localization), smart font switching can be used to identify CJK code in any text context, and switch to CJK font accordingly.
Force global dynamic localization
To save the localization setting, user should click on the "Force Global Dynamic Localization - Not in Use" popup menu to select the desired localization language and then close the control panel. This will save the localization setting for the Oriental Express. 
Control the CJK system font size
The PanALE Menu control panel also provide a mechanism to control the CJK system font size by clicking on the lowest popup menu ("Change Localization Font Size:") 
Because Pan-Asia Language Environment provides only 16 points bitmap fonts which are too large for localization purpose, user will be able to reduce the font size to 12 by selecting "Recuce by 3 Points" menu item. On the other hand, some users of Apple's language kit user may prefer to use larger font instead of those small 12 points fonts. The popup menu also provides such a control.
Registering application for Oriental Express
Oriental Express provides a small application "Localization Register" (a clone to Apple's "Language Register") to register any application to a specific language. If the localization database is available, the registered application will be automatically localized when it is launched.
To use Localization Register, double click on it or choose from the PanALE System Menu, this will bring up a dialog: 
Click on the pupup menu ("System Default") and select one of the available language, and then click on the "Choose Application" button, and browse to select the application.
Retouch Localization DataBase with Localization Compiler
PanALE Compiler can be used to retouch an existing localization database or create a new localization database. Select from PanALE system menu the "Localization Compiler", a dialog will be presented for reading in the localization log file. 
Click on "Cancel" to abort reading log file and create a new dictionary; or select the log file and click "Open". The Open command will read in the file and perform a redundant check for the localization entries. The result after compacting the dictionary is presented in the Dictionary Editor window: 
The Dictionary Editor window lists all the text drawing by the computer after the log starts - the original text will be listed as dictionary key after the MacOS icon, and the dictionary translation entry (if the entry already has a translation in the generic database or existing database) will be listed right after the keys with a PanALE icon. If there is no translation in the existing database, the translation entry is empty (as shown). User can click on either key entry or translation entry to edit the content. Go through the Dictionary window, remove undesirable entry or create any new entry as necessary. It should be noted that unless it is new dictionary key entry from scratch, the editing of Key entry is not recommended.
When user is completely satisfied with the dictionary entries, select "Compile Dictionary" under the Dictionary menu. If the application localization database exists, it will be updated. If this is a new localization from scratch, a new database specific to the application selected will be created. User can continue this circle (localization log - dictionary editing - localization compiler) until he is satisfied with the result.
Oriental Express - a real opportunity
The Oriental Express is freely available in current demo version. It only contains full localization for MacOS Finder and limited localization for other applications. The full localization of Netscape Communicator 4.0 (Chinese/Japanese), Microsoft Internet Explorer (Chinese/Japanese), TexEdit Plus (Chinese/Japanese), YA NewsWatcher (Chinese), MacBlue Telnet (Chinese) are provided for users' convenience.
If user registers the Oriental Express, the localization compiler will be available for user to customize his own localization database. User can change the GUI phrase on the spot, and create specific localization targetting each specific application. User can keep these new modified database modules, or sell back to us. It is fun, and a real opportunity.
For small software developers who can not afford the traditional localization process for regional market, by bundling PanALE/Oriental Express with your software release, you can expand you market penetration into the Asia market with a minimum effort.
For Asian software vendors, by bundling Oriental Express' appropriate localization database with your software, you can reach out to your regional potential customers in their own language and therefore increase your software sales to local market.

Trouble Shooting Hot Keys
Control-tab is the hot keys to bring back the localization if the localization database is missing in the action for some uncontrollable reasons. The PanALE Extension can be disabled by pressing option keys at startup time.

Registration
PanALE/Oriental Express has the following pricing.
Single user licenses, $25 per user
A Site License costs $500 and covers all locations for your organization within a 160 kilometer radius of your site (100 miles). One big advantage of a Site License is that you do not need to keep track of how many people at your site are using the software.
A World-Wide License costs $2000 and it covers all locations for your organization on the planet earth.
A Developer licence costs $100 compiler licensing fee and $1 for each software bundle. For details of developer license, contact UniDoc System LLC directly at info@unidocsys.com.
Paying for PanALE/Oriental Express is very simple. Open the Register program that accompanies PanALE/Oriental Express. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you desire for each program you wish to purchase (or Site or worldwide licenses). Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi. More specifics on the Register program to follow.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.
Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgment when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgment.
If you are paying with Cash or USD Check you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:

You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies, the conversion rate for non-USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical.
If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable people. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the form with their payment. Kagi can not invoice your company, you need to act on my behalf and generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.
Payments send via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.
