Installation
- Launch the PanALE Utilities after the initial installer installation.
- Select Chinese Japanese Korean scripts and system font typeface for these scripts.
- Select Oriental Express installation if you would like to use localized software.
- Restart the Macintoch.
- Use Localization Register to register any software to designated language for dynamic localization.
- Use PanALE Menu to enable the global dynamic localization for a specified language.
- Worldscript II from Apple Computer is optional for users of MacOS 7.1-8.1. It is strongly recommended for use with PanALE. MacOS 7.5 user can do a custom installation using Apple's "System 7.5 update 2.0" under international support; MacOS 7.6/8.0/8.1 user can do a custom installation using MacOS 7.6/8.0/8.1 installer under international. For system 7.1 users, the only legal way is that you already have some Apple's language kits or localized OS installed. Worldscript is also available in Chinese Language Kit updater 1.1.1.
- MacOS 8.5 provides multilingual internet access with Worldscript II and four sbit fonts (Beijing, Taipei, Osaka, and Seoul). If this option is installed, PanALE fbit fonts should NOT be used. To use PanALE fbit fonts under MacOS 8.5, user must remove the Worldscript II from the Extensions folder and have Oriental Express installed. PanALE fbit provides larger CJK fonts than those used in MacOS 8.5 multilingual internet access.
Usage Example:
How to set up internet browser for viewing CJK
For Worldscript II compatible application, such as Corel Wordperfect, there is no need for extra setup, just select CJK fonts. Remember that Beijing font corresponds to GB2312-1980, Taipei font corresponds to Big5 with Eten extension, Tokyo font corresponds to Shift-JIS, and Seoul font corresponds to Wansung coded Korean.
To set up internet browser for viewing CJK, there are two steps involved: 1) choose the font for each language encoding in the preferences dialog, and 2) select the encoding for your page to auto switch fonts.
For Netscape Navigator 3.0:

For Netscape Communicator 4.0:

For Microsoft Internet Explorer:

When you want to view a CJK page, just select the corresponding encoding, for example, Simplified Chinese (GB), Japanese (Auto-Detect), etc. For example, for Netscape 3.0:
The same principles and procedures apply to newer version of Netscape and Explorer, explore it and use common sense.
Tips
- For CJK text input: Unicorn Editor is free for registered Pan-Asia Language Environment user with its own CJK text input environment. Just input all text and cut/paste.
- Use "PanALE Utilities" application to reset the selected system CJK font to a different style.
- Use "Localization Register" located in Apple menu or the PanALE menu control panel to control software localization to specified language. This is a enhanced cloner to Apple's Language Register.
- PanALE Extension is a cloner to Apple's "Language Kit Extension". On system 7.1+, a demo database for dynamic GUI localization is provided: for Finder and selected applications such as Unicorn Editor/TexEdit Plus/SimpleText/Netscape Communicater/Internet Explorer, the PanALE Extension provides most of the dynamic Chinese/Japanese/Korean localization. The commercial version of Oriental Express will be available which contains dynamic Chinese/Japanese/Korean localization for most of the popular commercial products. Ask your nearest software dealer to carry the Oriental Express.
FYI - CJK Input Methods
Although Unicorn Editor is free with registered Pan-Asia Language Environment user as an CJK text input environment, there are other CJK input methods available for downloading from the internet. Choose the language input method that you would like to work with, but I am not responsible for your illegal usage of these net resources.
- There are two simplified Chinese (GB2312-1980) input methods. The Lalasan Input Method can be obtained by click here; remember to download all its updates as well. The Simplified Chinese Input Method in CLK updater 1.1.1 can also be used when Oriental Express is installed and configured for Simplified Chinese localization.
- There are two traditional Chinese (Big5) input methods. Eten input method can be obtained by clicking here. Use Stuffit Expander to expand the file and put the folder content into extension folder. The Lalasan Input Method can be obtained by click here; remember to download all its updates as well.
- There are two free Korean (Wansung) input methods. Sejong Input method can be obtained by clicking here, you need also download the update to make it work. Aram Input Method can be obtained by clicking here. For a detailed review of these input methods, readers are referred to Dennis Hanks' home page or Jungshik Shin' home page.
Registration
PanALE/UniText bundle has the following pricing.
Single user licenses, $20 per user
A Site License costs $500 and covers all locations for your organization within a 160 kilometer radius of your site (100 miles). One big advantage of a Site License is that you do not need to keep track of how many people at your site are using the software.
A World-Wide License costs $2000 and it covers all locations for your organization on the planet earth.
Paying for PanALE/UniText is very simple. Open the Register program that accompanies UniText LE. Enter your name, your email address, and the number of single user licenses you desire for each program you wish to purchase (or Site or worldwide licenses). Save or Copy or Print the data from the Register program and send the data and payment to Kagi. More specifics on the Register program to follow.
If paying with Credit Card or First Virtual, you can email or fax the data to Kagi. Their email address is sales@kagi.com and their fax number is +1 510 652-6589. You can either Copy the data from Register and paste into the body of an email message or you can save the data to a file and you can attach that file to an email message. There is no need to compress the data file, it's already pretty small. If you have a fax modem, just Print the data to the Kagi fax number.
Payments sent via email are processed within 3 to 4 days. You will receive an email acknowledgment when it is processed. Payments sent via fax take up to 10 days and if you provide a correct internet email address you will receive an email acknowledgment.
If you are paying with Cash or USD Check you should print the data using the Register application and send it to the address shown on the form, which is:
Kagi
1442-A Walnut Street #392-3SF
Berkeley, California 94709-1405
USA
You can pay with a wide variety of cash from different countries but at present if you pay via check, it must be a check drawn in US Dollars. Kagi cannot accept checks in other currencies, the conversion rate for non-USD checks is around USD 15 per check and that is just not practical.
If you have a purchasing department, you can enter all the data into the Register program and then select Invoice as your payment method. Print three copies of the form and send it to your accounts payable people. You might want to highlight the line that mentions that they must include a copy of the form with their payment. Kagi can not invoice your company, you need to act on my behalf and generate the invoice and handle all the paperwork on your end.
Payments send via postal mail take time to reach Kagi and then up to 10 days for processing. Again, if you include a correct email address, you will hear from Kagi when the form is processed.
