Installation and Configuration
The PanALE/UniText (a replacement for Unicorn Editor) is now a complete distribution package, i.e., it contains all the essential fonts, input methods, language scripts for CJK languages.
If you download the PanALE/UniText from internet
or info-mac CD-ROM, you should use Stuffit Expander to retrieve the PanALE/UniText.
The complete package should look like following:

You should not alter the directory arrangement of
above files, the auto-configuration of UniText requires the above files
remain in the same order.
PanALE installation is mandatory if you do not have Apple's language kit installed. You can install the PanALE fbit fonts and international resources using "PanALE Utility", or just by using "UniText".
The PanALE Utility provide the following options:

Click "Uninstall" to uninstall all the PanALE font/system
resources.
Click Oriental Express to install only the Oriental
Express demo package. Oriental Express is a dynamic localization package
for Apple' s CLK, JLK, and KLK users.
Click Finish to quit PanALE installer.
Click Install to continue to install each language
module.
For use with UniText, Oriental Express is not required,
but recommended. Click "Install" to continue.

If you install any of the above options, you will have to restart the Mac computer. If you start the UniText without PanALE, UniText will launch the PanALE Utility for PanALE installation based on its preference setting.
Worldscript II technology is Apple's Asian Language solution. It is freely available from MacOS 7.5.3 and up. Although PanALE can work and to some extend replace the Worldscript II functionality, Worldscript II system extensions are strongly recommended for running UniText. You may choose not to install Worldscript II, in that case, UniText will use more memory to handle the PanALE fbit fonts.
Worldscript II contains following system extensions:
If you are a system 7.1 user, above extensions are available from CLK updater 1.1.1. Use DiskCopy 6.1.2 to mount the disk image, the extensions are located in a folder named "support files" on the disk, DO NOT USE INSTALLER, PLEASE! Just drag and drop those files unto the System Folder icon. Finder will then ask you for permission to put extension into Extension Folder, etc., just click ok. Note, you already have any version of Worldscript II, you must bypass this step.
If you are a system 7.5 user, above extensions can
be custom installed using "system 7.5 update 2.0". You can obtain this
update from Apple's web site http://www.apple.com. Look for either Worldscript
II or international support options.
If you are a MacOS 7.6 user, above extensions can
be custom installed using MacOS 7.6 installer. Look for either Worldscript
or international support options. You should use the "Install System Software"
located in Disk "Install 1". Avoid the installer located in the Disk "Install
Me First".
MacOS 8.1 user needs to custom install the Worldscript
II extension using the system installer.
If you can not find the Worldscript II option using
the "Add/Remove" function in the installer, you can install the Worldscript
II directly following these directions: look for the installer in the illustrated
folders: System Software Installers: Net Install: Software Installers:
System Software: Mac OS 8: Installer. Double click the installer to install
Worldscript II.
As user starts up the installer (system 7.5 update
2.0 installer and system installer 7.6/8.0/8.1), look for the following
screen:
You may need to click on the popup menu at the left top corner and
change from "Easy Install" to "Custom Install" to get to this screen. Click
the triangle before "International", and then check the "Worldscript II"
box. Start installation. You are all set.
If you have speech manager in your system, you can enjoy the "Text to Speech" functions of your Macintosh. The English version of the Text to Speech (aka, Macintalk as it was called a few years back) can be found in Apple's web site. For those peoples who want to learn or proof-read Chinese this way, you can install the Chinese TTS onto your system. The Chinese TTS does not depend on the Chinese OS, therefore, it can be used directly with UniText for the Chinese reading without language kit. Click to download the Chinese TTS software from Apple.
If your Mac is linked to internet, UniText supports command clicking of URLs using Internet Config (version 1.1 or newer), which you can download from here .
Internet Config is a system extension to hold information such as your e-mail address, helpers, internet clients, etc. Application supporting Internet Config includes Anarchie, Fetch, NewsWatcher, etc. Other URL such as telnet, http, can also be launched directly by command clicking on the URLs.
UniText comes with its own Chinese/Japanese/Korean
input method modules. You can disable the input method by setting the "Use
Custom Input Method" check box in the Preference->Features option. With
this option checked, the custom input method will used even if you have
Apple's LK input method installed in your system.
If you are a Roman script language user, or you
only want to use Apple's Text Service Manager (TSM) component, set the
Features option as follows:

If you are going to use Chinese/Japanese/Korean custom
input method, even though Apple's LK is already installed, set the Features
option as follow:

Korean user should uncheck the "Input with Wildcard" check box.
4) UniText fbit Font Handling:
For Roman Script Language Users, The UniText application
does not need special installation. It is a stand alone Editor for Roman
script language. You do not have to use PanALE Utilities if you will never
use the Chinese, Japanese, Korean (CJK) editing features. Make sure the
preference is set as following:

For Chinese, Japanese, Korean Users, the UniText
comes with four CJK fbit fonts for basic CJK editing and viewing if you
decide not to use Worldscript II. Please always use PanALE Utilities for
the font installation purpose to avoid possible font conflict. When you
do not have Worldscript installed, you need to set the Languages option
as following to enable the PanALE fbit font:

You may select to load only one of the languages
according to your need by unchecking other languages. This will save you
a lot of memory.
When Worldscript II is installed, UniText will use
Worldscript II's ability to handle fbit fonts. The Languages option will
all be disabled.
If you would like to install any Apple language kits,
you should first use PanALE Utilities to uninstall PanALE, and then do
the LK installation, then re-install the PanALE using PanALE Utilities.
